EAGER: Reaching 5G-Advanced and 6G through network simulation

The EAGER project researched future 5G-Advanced and 6G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technologies. Magister led the project’s simulative analysis. We enhanced our simulators further to research future technologies.

Standardized communication systems require several years of prior research. During this time, the future technology alternatives and potential must be identified. The EAGER project researched 5G-Advanced and 6G NTN technologies in the context of 3GPP standardization.

EAGER paved the way for use cases and technologies that will form the heart of 5G-Advanced and 6G satellite communications. Magister worked on this project together with the University of Bologna, Thales Alenia Space Italy, Thales Alenia Space France, and Martel Innovate.

“The EAGER project is a continuation of Magister’s previous projects, and our core business”, stated the CEO of Magister Solutions, Jani Puttonen.

The ESA-funded EAGER project started in 2022 and was completed in 2023.

Magister’s simulators look beyond 5G and 6G

Magister led the project’s simulative analysis of the technologies. We further enhanced our simulators to be able to research future technologies.

We used two of our simulators in the project:

1) C-DReAM: a capacity level simulator for LEO satellite constellation networks
2) ALIX: a detailed system / network packet level system simulator for system / protocol level performance evaluations.

“Magister’s ALIX simulator is more than likely to be used for 5G-Advanced research”, Puttonen added. “The closer the solutions of the future are to now, the more detailed and specific the simulation and simulator requirements become.”

During the project, Magister developed simulators to research future NTN technologies. In addition, we enhanced our own services. This way, Magister SimLab customers could get a taste of future simulation possibilities.

“We researched various potential technologies in this project and tested them through simulations. These techniques may very well be the basis for future 5G-Advanced and 6G standards.”
